Orthodontic Treatment for Kids

Children’s smiles change quickly. An early orthodontic evaluation helps parents understand whether development is on track, whether a concern should be monitored or whether timely treatment could make a meaningful difference.

Dr. Makhzan provides calm, age-appropriate evaluations for children in Roswell and surrounding communities. His goal is not to begin treatment as early as possible. It is to choose the right care at the right time.

Why Age Seven Matters

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic evaluation by age seven. At this stage, children usually have a mix of primary and permanent teeth, and the jaws are still developing.

This allows Dr. Makhzan to evaluate:

  • How permanent teeth are erupting
  • Whether enough space is available
  • The way the upper and lower jaws fit together
  • Crossbites, underbites, deep bites or open bites
  • Early or late loss of primary teeth
  • Oral habits that may influence development

Many seven-year-olds do not need treatment. Monitoring can be the most thoughtful recommendation.

When Early Treatment May Help

Phase One treatment is used selectively while a child is still growing. Depending on the diagnosis, it may help guide jaw development, address a significant bite issue, create room for permanent teeth or reduce the risk of damage to protruding teeth.

Treatment may include an expander, limited braces or another orthodontic appliance. Dr. Makhzan will explain the specific objective and what early care can and cannot accomplish.

A First Visit Built for Clarity

Dr. Makhzan will examine your child’s teeth, bite and growth pattern. Digital scans or images may be taken when useful. He will then explain one of three likely paths:

  • No treatment is needed.
  • Growth and eruption should be monitored.
  • Early treatment offers a clear benefit now.

Helping Children Feel Comfortable

New environments are easier when children know what to expect. Our team explains each step, invites questions and never wants a child to feel rushed. A positive early experience can build confidence for future dental and orthodontic visits.

A healthy smile starts with room to grow.

If the upper jaw doesn’t develop wide enough, it may lead to:

Crowded adult teeth

Making space so permanent teeth can come in where they belong.

Crossbites

Helping the upper and lower teeth meet evenly for a stable, comfortable bite.

Teeth coming in off course

Steering incoming teeth toward a healthier position early on.

Blocked or impacted canines

Creating the space canines need to come in on their own.

A narrow smile

Widening the arch for a fuller, more balanced smile.

Breathing concerns

A wider palate may help support easier breathing through the nose.

Guiding jaw growth at the right age gives your child a stronger foundation for a healthy smile that lasts.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should my child first see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first evaluation by age 7. We offer free consultations at Makhzan Orthodontics.
Not necessarily. Many children benefit more from regular monitoring as their teeth and jaws develop. In these cases we recommend waiting until they’re ready for one comprehensive phase of treatment.

An expander is an appliance used in selected growing patients to address the width or relationship of the jaws. Its purpose and design depend on the diagnosis.

Common concerns include crossbones, crowding, narrow jaws, and habits like thumb-sucking that affect the bite.
We look at your child’s jaw growth, bite, and developing teeth, recommending treatment only when it truly makes a difference.
Often, yes. Phase 1 treatment addresses early concerns, while a shorter Phase 2 with braces or clear aligners can put the finishing touches on their smile once all the adult teeth are in.
Most Phase 1 treatments take 6-12 months, followed by occasional checkups as your child grows.
